Adventure Landing Hosting a “Be Water Aware” Water Safety Day

Adventure Landing’s Shipwreck Island Waterpark is on a mission to make Northeast Florida “water-aware.”  May has been designated National Water Safety Month by the World Waterpark Association, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals and the National Recreation & Parks Association.  As a WWA member, Adventure Landing is taking action to educate the public on how to prevent drownings, recreational water-related injuries and sun damage by offering educational information to the media during National Water Safety Month.

Protect Pets From Heat Stress and Stroke

Like humans, pets are susceptible to overheating. Older dogs, flat-faced dogs, overweight dogs and puppies have the highest risk of heat stroke or heat stress, but owners should make sure that all pets have plenty of cool water and a source of continuous shade when outdoors as temperatures rise across Jacksonville.

Youth Win Immunization PSA Contest

Each year in the United States, we lose 1,070 people to meningitis and 4,590 people to cervical cancer caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In an effort to spread the word about these vaccine-preventable diseases and raise awareness among teens, Brunet-García Advertising sponsored the Florida Bureau of Immunization’s You Call the Shots public service announcement (PSA) contest; inviting youth ages 11 to 18 to produce and enter a 30-second  PSA highlighting the importance of HPV and meningitis vaccinations.

Find out why MWKF is more than just an afterschool program!

The MaliVai Washington Kids Foundation will be celebrating its 15 year anniversary on Friday, April 15, 2011 with an Open House Celebration for the community. Come out and meet the staff and students of MWKF and take a tour of the facility and programs. In 1997, MWKF served youth in the Jacksonville area, by offering FREE tennis lessons to local Boys & Girls Clubs. MWKF’s flagship program- the TnT (Tennis-n-Tutoring) afterschool program began in one small classroom in the Emmett Reed Community Center with just 25 students. In 2008, with supporters from the community, the MaliVai Washington Youth Center was built- a 9,400 square foot facility complete with classrooms, media center/computer room, kitchen, teen room, fitness center, library, administrative offices and community rooms. Today, the program has grown to more than 160 students in Kindergarten- high school. MWKF also offers several programs and events to the community at large.
