November is National Diabetes Awareness Month

Throughout the month of November, National Diabetes Awareness Month, the North Florida Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the world's largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research, is teaming up with local businesses as well as the University of Florida to increase awareness of type 1 diabetes and to raise funds to help accelerate research leading to a cure for the disease and its complications.

  • Cruisers Grill is holding five JDRF Nights on the every Monday in November at all three restaurant locations. A portion of the proceeds from the JDRF Nights will benefit JDRF.
  • Build-A-Bear Workshop stores in Jacksonville and across the nation are offering a unique fundraising opportunity for JDRF, through special donation prompts on the pin pad checkout stations. The pin pad will prompt all credit/debit card customers for a charitable donation, which will directly benefit JDRF chapters.
  • Walgreens will be participating in JDRF sneaker sales throughout the month. Walgreens customers can buy a paper JDRF sneaker for $1. All proceeds from the sales will benefit JDRF

In addition, the University of Florida Diabetes Research Center will be hosting a research tour in Gainesville on Friday, November 12th.  This event will offer a fascinating look into the important research currently being conducted for diabetes.  Highlights include a research update from Dr. Schatz and Dr. Atkinson and discussions on topics such as genetic risk, autoantibodies, understanding the human pancreas, cellular therapies, and innovative therapies. Participants will also be touring the diabetes laboratory for an in-depth look at research first hand.
