Crash Victim Dies One Month Later

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A month after being injured in a crash on the Northside, the victim has died.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, 26-year-old Jordan R. Brothers was driving on International Airport Drive after midnight August 14.

Investigators believe Brothers' vehicle for some reason left the road and struck a tree in the median.

Brothers was hospitalized, and JSO said he died today.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.

How Will Magnet School Kids Get To School?

JACKSONVILLE - The parking lot at Darnell-Cookman Middle High School may be busier than the normal first day of school on Monday, August 22.  Kids like 13 year old Elizabeth Caldwell, who normally take the school bus, will be carpooling with her Mom, April Caldwell, and two other students this year.

That's because the District will no longer provide free bus transportation to 7 Duval County magnet schools. The schools are Darnell-Cookman, Stanton, Paxon, Landon, James Weldon Johnson, Kirby-Smith and LaVilla. The District is expected to save 3 million dollars a year cutting out transportation to the 7 magnet schools.

Smoky Conditions Could Impact Morning Commute

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Signs are up along JTB Monday morning warning drivers about smoky conditions in the area.

A large fire began burning Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville in the area of Hodges and J. Turner Butler Boulevard.

It is still smoky Monday morning, but it was not severely impacted visibility around 5 a.m. Our crew could not see flames or an orange glow from our live location, but our access is restricted because it's private property. 

According to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue, there are two fires burning on the Hodges' family property. Lightning started both fires late Sunday afternoon.

The fires are burning on private property. They're estimated to be about 200 acres. One fire is said to be threatening homes and barns.

At this time Division of Forestry officials say the fires are not under control..

JSO: Man Okay After Being Hit By Train, Traffic Backed Up

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pedestrian is okay after being hit by a train on the Northside, according to police.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office reports a CSX conductor spotted the man on the track late Wednesday night and tried to stop. Police said the train could not halt in time and hit the man. The conductor told police he thought the man might have been sleeping.

The victim, who has not been identified, was able to crawl out from under the train. Police said he was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriffs' Office, southbound traffic is being diverted from North Main Street near East 50th Street due to the incident.

This affects traffic in the areas near Main and Pearl Streets as well as Norwood Avenue.

Officers at the scene indicated that the incident occurred near the JSO substation at the Gateway mall on Norwood Avenue.
