Literacy Week Volunteers Encouraged to Become Mentors

To continue the momentum of last week’s Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida!, volunteers throughout the Sunshine State are encouraged to expand their commitment to service by becoming a mentor.  Statistics show that students are far less likely to skip school, have behavioral problems or begin using illegal drugs or alcohol when a mentor is active in their lives.

Duval County Public Schools (DCPS) tonight named Rosemarie Wilkening, part-time English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) paraprofessional at Chets Creek Elementary, as its 2011 School-Related Employee of the Year.

Area Spelling Champs to Compete for Regional Honors

More than a dozen of the area’s best spellers are brushing up on their vocabulary to prepare for the Northeast Florida regional spelling bee championship.  Fifteen county champions will vie for the honor of Regional Champion during The Florida Times-Union Regional Spelling Bee Championship. The Spelling Bee is open to students in fifth through eighth grades who won their designated county bee.

Local Area Students Raise Money for Cancer Research

Clink, clank, clunk!  That’s the sound more than 300,000 students throughout North Florida will soon hear as they pour their pocket change into collection jars to support Olive Garden’s 17th-annual Pasta for Pennies program benefiting The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) School & Youth campaign.  Last year, Olive Garden’s Pasta for Pennies collected $6.1 million nationally, bringing the total amount donated since the program’s inception to more than $53 million.

1,305 Children Enrolled Into Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten during Kick Off Event

Early Learning Coalition of Duval (ELC of Duval) enrolled more than 1,305 four- year-olds into the FREE Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) program this weekend at the VPK Kick Off, which was held at the FSCJ Downtown campus, Fletcher High School and Ed White High School. The event drew the 2nd largest number of parents and families in the history of VPK in Jacksonville.
