First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to Host Census Rep

The First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FCHCC) is hosting a data services specialist from the Census Bureau at its May professional networking meeting. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss Hispanic population trends reported in the 2010 Census. The Census reported that Hispanics account for 56 percent of the nation’s growth over the past decade, according to the Pew Hispanic Center. Florida has seen dramatic increases as well.

Mayoral candidate, Alvin Brown, will be attending the event to speak to guests and participate in a meet and greet.

The event will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011, from 6 – 8 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront, 225 East Coastline Dr., and is free and open to the public. Visit http://www.fchcc.com/ for tickets or for more information.

Adventure Landing Hosting a “Be Water Aware” Water Safety Day

Adventure Landing’s Shipwreck Island Waterpark is on a mission to make Northeast Florida “water-aware.”  May has been designated National Water Safety Month by the World Waterpark Association, the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals and the National Recreation & Parks Association.  As a WWA member, Adventure Landing is taking action to educate the public on how to prevent drownings, recreational water-related injuries and sun damage by offering educational information to the media during National Water Safety Month.

Pastor Biking from Miami to NYC to raise money for Haiti to be in Jacksonville on Sunday, May 8

On May 1, Pastor Guy Melton of Oasis Church South Florida, located in Pembroke Pines, began a mission to ride his bike 1500 miles from Miami to New York City (the equivalent distance from Miami to Haiti, roundtrip). As part of this journey, Guy will be biking through North Florida, including the city of Jacksonville. He will be speaking at Oasis Church North Florida in North Jacksonville on Sunday, May 8 at 10:30am at the Hollywood Theaters in River City Marketplace.

Belk Charity Event and a Good Reason to Go Shopping!

Belk Spring Charity Sale - Belk will hold its annual Spring Charity Sale this Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. to benefit local charities, schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the company’s 16-state market area.

A $5 charitable donation gains customers admission to a private sale with merchandise discounts ranging from an extra 20 to 70 percent off on items throughout the store, including special savings on rarely discounted brands. Customers will also receive $5 off their first purchase of $5 or more at the event, and Belk cardholders will receive double Rewards points (and Belk Elite cardholders, triple Rewards points) for card purchases.

Real$ense Prosperity Campaign Hosts "Tax Blitz Day"

Real$ense Prosperity Campaign, an initiative of United Way of Northeast Florida, will host Tax Blitz Day on Friday, April 15, 2011 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Gateway WorkSource located at 5000-2 Norwood Avenue in Jacksonville. For Northeast Florida residents who have not yet filed a 2010 income tax return, there is still time and thanks to Real$ense, the Internal Revenue Service and partners, there is also help, free of charge.
