High School Students: Time to Enter Manatee Art Contest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites high school art students across the state to participate in a contest to create a piece of manatee artwork that will be used on the 2011-2012 manatee decal.

Students in grades 9-12 in Florida should coordinate with their school’s art teacher to submit the artwork, because each school may submit no more than five entries. Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest. Contest details and forms are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast-January 14, 2011 Tickets on Sale Now!

The City of Jacksonville’s 24th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast will be held Friday, Jan. 14 at the Prime Osborn Convention Center.  Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the breakfast and program will begin at 7:30 a.m. Parking is free to attendees. 

The Artist Series Presents THE CAPITOL STEPS January 19-23, 2011

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Grace And Truth Community Development Corporation Hosts Holiday Event

On December 10, at Gateway Town Center. starting at 4pm Grace And Truth Community Development  Corporation. Is hosting a performance of, The Jacksonville  Symphony Youth Orchestra Quintet.  The newly formed North Brookside Community Gospel Choir will open and close the concert.  There will be a special performance of a scene from the Nutcracker, performed by Expressions Dance of Jacksonville an African American dance school featuring children and adults. This event is a Free Community Concert to celebrate the Christmas season. The Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra (woodwind quintet) musicians will perform for 45 minutes. Art on the Go

First Coast families are invited to tap into their creative sides at JaxParks’ next Arts on the Go event. This free art event offers hands-on activities including drawing, painting and making crafts. Art instructors will be on hand to assist participants. Each person will leave with a personally created masterpiece to take home to display and enjoy.

Through January 9 – Prehistoric PredatorsWalk alongside the dinosaurs!  Encounter a soaring Pteranodon with a 23-foot wingspan, a Maiasaura mother caring for her hatchlings, a Pachycephalosaurus, Apatosaurus, Albertosaurus and more in the limited-engagement exhibit, Prehistoric Predators. Dinosaur models are handcrafted based on fossil records and equipped with internal computers, making them look – and sound – like the magnificent beasts that once roamed Earth! 

Jacksonville Fashion Week Hosts Model Casting Call

Jacksonville Fashion Week (JFW), a multi-event celebration of fashion on Florida’s First Coast, is hosting a two-day model casting call from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Walkers (2692 Post St.) and Thursday, Nov. 18 at The Brasserie (Beach Plaza, 1312 Beach Blvd.). JFW officials will select a total of 100-125 models to grace the catwalk at the inaugural Jacksonville Fashion Week, March 23-26, 2011.
