How to choose a daycare and what you may have to pay

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- When it comes to choosing a daycare your first step is to identify your priority: are you looking for something near your home? Do you want a center or a family in-home facility?

"You go to a center, it is 15-20 kids, one or two teachers. With me, it is six kids," said LaRonya McGlothin.  

McGlothin is an family home care owner, she started her business ten years ago to be near her daughter. She said once you've set your priorities do your research.

"You should be looking for quality," she said.

Also, check to see if there's a curriculum or a program that stimulates the child's growth. The next step is to check the Florida Department of Children and families website: www.dcf.state.fl.us

Man gets 45-year prison sentence for attempted murder

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A man who was found guilty of attempted second degree murder in June has been sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Raymond Matthew Austin, 19, lured Carl Davis into a parking lot and shot him in October 2010. His ex-girlfriend and co-defendant Shanda Merritt goes to trial on an attempted murder charge on August 20, according to a release from the State Attorney's Office.

Austin will go back on trial in another case in which he faces kidnapping, armed robbery and first degree murder charges in the October 2010 death of Charles Soukup, 83.

Woman arrested after landing at Jacksonville airport

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A woman was arrested by Jacksonville Aviation Authority police after landing at Jacksonville International Airport on a Jet Blue flight from Puerto Rico, JIA spokesman Michael Stewart confirmed.

The woman, who was going through customs and found to have outstanding warrants, was escorted from the plane in Jacksonville by JAA police, Stewart said.

Prior to her arrest, the airline and JAA were contacted and the airline was able to identify her. However, Stewart said he did not have the woman's name.

She was then taken into custody, taken downtown and booked. There will be a booking report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, Stewart said.

She was wanted by the state of Maryland.

Hundreds involved in property damage at Walmart

UPDATE, 7/18/12: Investigators with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office are requesting the public's help in identifying the person seen in the photo above. JSO said the person is believed to be involved in the incident.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hundreds of people, mostly teenagers, are responsible for about $1,500 in property damage at the Walmart on Lem Turner Road, according to a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

The crowd entered the store around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and began throwing produce, yelling and taking items. Before leaving the store, someone from the group destroyed an electronic security scanner, according to an account from the manager in the report.

Pedestrian taken to Shands after hit by JSO vehicle

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A pedestrian has serious, but non life-threatening injuries after being struck Friday by a JSO vehicle.

The crash happened on Moncrief Road. The pedestrian has been taken to Shands Jacksonville for treatment.

At the scene, Detective J.D. Gregory said the pedestrian stepped off of the sidewalk and was struck by the patrol car head-on.

The officer was not responding to any calls and did not have lights or sirens on.

Gregory said they do not know how fast the officer was traveling.

We also do not know the identities of anyone involved.

Any information about the presence of drugs or alcohol in the pedestrian's system was not immediately available.

Wanted: Olympic portraits by kids

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- We're counting down to the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

As we get closer to the games, we want your kids to get involved. Have your child draw and color his or her favorite Olympic Portrait. Portraits can include the rings, the torch, a favorite athlete or even the new Olympic Stadium in London.

Beginning July 23, 102, we will feature a different portrait each day on Good Morning Jacksonville though the closing ceremony on August 12th.
